Noh traditional theater training
kyoto Arts Center, Kyoto, Japan
In the summer of 2018 I traveled to Kyoto, Japan to study the art of Noh performance at Kyoto Arts Center as part of their Traditional Theater Training. The program was an intensive exploring the history, practice, and techniques of Noh which culminated in a final recital performance. I had the honor of working with three Noh masters and had the opportunity to perform in a traditional Noh theater that has been in the family of one of my sensei for generations. The piece I learned, rehearsed, and performed is called Kakitsubata, which translates to “Water Iris.” I was also able to study the art of kotsuzumi - a shoulder drum used in Noh performance.
